Overcoming crises through interdisciplinarity: Science is and remains a central pillar of our society. For centuries, it has shaped our coexistence and contributed significantly to the constant expansion of our knowledge. Especially in times of increasing crises, it is crucial to advance scientific knowledge to overcome the challenges of our time. The interdisciplinary interaction of different disciplines plays a central role in this. Only by looking at problems from different perspectives can we develop well-thought-out and sustainable solutions.

Why accessibility matters: At the same time, it is our collective responsibility as a society to make education—and thus science—accessible to all to incorporate diverse perspectives and give them a voice. Only a society in which scientific findings are part of every public debate and education is freely accessible is largely immune to populist tendencies. This makes it even more important to make science visible and highlight its significance. This year’s Science Ball is another opportunity to do just that, as we come together to celebrate science and put it center stage.

Selina Wienerroither, originally from Vöcklabruck in Upper Austria, moved to Vienna in 2022 to study theatre-, film- and mediastudies. In 2025, Wienerroither was the VSStÖ’s top candidate nationwide.
