Orientation in Confusing Times
Quality journalism is more than just a successful business model: free, independent media are the oxygen that democratic societies—and, indeed, the scientific community—need to breathe.
The Vienna Lecture on Science Communication 2027 will take place on Friday, January 22, 2027, at 4:00 p.m., in cooperation with the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW). Our guest speaker is Rainer Esser, one of the most prominent media managers in the German-speaking world. After 27 years as CEO of the ZEIT publishing group, he transitioned on February 1, 2026, to the role of Executive Advisor at Holtzbrinck and joined the Supervisory Board of ZEIT. The event will be held in the Ceremonial Hall (Festsaal) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, Dr.-Ignaz-Seipel-Platz 2, 1010 Vienna. Registration is required to attend; places will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Please note that the lecture will be held in German.
